Corten, also known as weathering steel, comes in two types: Corten A and Corten B. Both types offer corrosion resistance, but Corten B is alloyed for greater strength, which may slightly compromise its corrosion protection.

How Corten Steel Works

Small amounts of copper and other elements in Corten steel change the nature of the rust that forms on its surface. This rust becomes finely grained and tightly adheres to the steel, acting like a self-generated paint coating. This coating slows the corrosion rate by smothering subsequent attacks.

Usage Guidelines

Corten steel must be carefully used, especially in the early months. It requires alternating wet and dry exposure to form the protective corrosion layer. Without this, the rust layer can become disrupted, leading to faster corrosion than plain carbon steel. For instance, if used unpainted on a road bridge where the underside doesn’t dry out, a coarse, non-protective rust deposit may form instead of the desired protective coating.

Performance in Suitable Conditions

When used in appropriate conditions, Corten steel can perform exceptionally well, avoiding the need for painting and offsetting its higher initial cost. However, it has been oversold in the past, particularly outside the USA, in climates different from the inland dry environments of the Southern and Midland states. In cooler, damper locations, Corten may fail to develop its protective patina, necessitating grit-blasting and painting like any other steel bridge. Additionally, there can be unsightly brown rusty runoff if proper provisions aren't made to manage it.

Specialized Applications

Corten steel excels in certain applications, such as Ljungstrom-type air heaters for power generation systems, which face high erosion rates due to sootblower use. The wetting/drying cycle during sootblower operation allows the protective patina to form effectively, significantly extending the service life of air heater plates.
