1. Achieving Desired Metallographic Structure
The bright annealing process involves heat treating finished stainless steel products under a protective atmosphere. The metallographic structure required after bright annealing varies depending on performance requirements. For instance, the typical heat treatment process for 300 series austenitic stainless steel involves solution treatment. During heating, carbides dissolve into austenite at temperatures between 1050~1150°C. Rapid cooling below 350°C is crucial to achieve a uniform unidirectional austenite structure. The cooling rate should reach 55°C/s to avoid coarse grains that may affect surface finish. Ferritic stainless steel (400 series) requires relatively lower heating temperatures (around 900°C) and often involves slow cooling for an annealed and softened structure. Martensitic stainless steel undergoes annealing and may also undergo segmented quenching followed by tempering. Modern bright annealing furnaces often utilize strong convection cooling with adjustable air volumes in three cooling sections. This allows precise control over cooling rates to ensure the desired metallographic structure.
2. Preventing Oxidation for a Bright Surface
Bright annealing occurs in a hydrogen (H2) protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation. Strict control of the protective atmosphere is crucial to meet the requirements for bright annealed (BA) boards. Oxidation of alloying elements such as chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), and titanium (Ti) within the heating temperature range affects surface brightness. Chromium oxidation leads to dechromization, reducing stainless steel's corrosion resistance. Maintaining the purity of the protective gas is essential. Sealed muffle covers prevent contamination, ensuring a relatively pure environmental space. Furnace design, including the location of strip entrances and exits and sealing requirements, minimizes the risk of air intrusion. Sealing components must meet parts per million (ppM) level sealing requirements to prevent oxygen and water vapor intrusion and ensure protective gas integrity.
