Stainless Steel Sheet Cutting: The Essentials of a Durable and Versatile Process

When cutting small parts from steel plates, the heat supplied by the welding gun and preheating will accumulate in the workpiece. The smaller the size of the cut piece, the less likely it is to be cut than 200mm, otherwise there is a risk of softening the workpiece. The best way to eliminate the risk of softening is cold cutting, such as water jet cutting. If hot cutting must be used, plasma or laser cutting should be selected. This is because flame cutting provides more heat to the workpiece, thereby increasing the temperature of the workpiece.
1. Cutting method
Cold cutting
Cold cutting methods include water jet cutting, shearing, sawing and abrasive cutting.
Hot cutting
Hot cutting methods include oxygen fuel flame cutting (flame cutting), plasma cutting and laser cutting.

2. Cutting technology
To understand the general characteristics and thickness range of various cutting methods, process tests should be carried out. Flame cutting of high-grade wear-resistant steel plates is similar to cutting of ordinary low-carbon and low-alloy steels. However, special attention needs to be paid to prevent cracks when cutting thick wear-resistant steel plates.

Preventing cutting cracks
Cutting cracks in steel plates are similar to hydrogen-induced cracks in welding. These delayed cracks may appear from 48 hours to several weeks after cutting. The thicker and harder the steel plate, the more likely it is that cutting cracks will occur.

Preheating Cutting
Preheating before cutting is the most effective way to prevent cutting cracks. The preheating temperature depends on the quality grade and thickness of the steel plate. Methods include flame guns, electric heating pads, or heating furnaces. Make sure the entire steel plate is heated evenly and avoid local overheating.

Slow Cutting
Reducing the cutting speed is another way to avoid cutting cracks, although it is not as reliable as preheating. If it is not possible to preheat the entire plate, local preheating can be used. Preheat the cutting strip several times with a flame gun before cutting, aiming for a preheat temperature of about 100°C. The maximum cutting speed depends on the grade and thickness of the steel plate.

By following these guidelines, the durability and quality of stainless steel products can be significantly improved during the cutting process.
