Corten Steel
Corten Cladding does not rely on a traditional coating system but instead forms a protective rust patina through controlled atmospheric corrosion. The addition of alloying elements such as copper, chromium, and nickel allows the surface rust layer to become dense and stable, preventing further deep corrosion. This self-protecting mechanism makes weathering steel an ideal material for architectural cladding and outdoor design applications.
Corten Steel Plates are commonly available in thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 20 mm and standard sheet sizes such as 1000 × 2000 mm, 1219 × 2438 mm, and 1500 × 3000 mm. The selection of size and thickness depends on application requirements, including architectural design, landscape construction, and industrial use, ensuring a balance between aesthetics, durability, and structural performance.
Corten Panels are typically available in thicknesses ranging from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm, depending on application requirements. Thin sheets are mainly used for architectural decoration, while medium and thick plates are used for landscaping and structural applications. Selecting the correct thickness ensures optimal balance between aesthetics, durability, and mechanical performance in outdoor environments.
Corten steel is positioned between carbon steel and wear-resistant steel in terms of price. It is more expensive than carbon steel due to alloying elements that improve corrosion resistance, but generally less expensive than wear-resistant steel, which requires advanced heat treatment and high alloy content. The final selection depends on whether the priority is initial cost, corrosion resistance, or wear performance in the application environment.
Corten laser cut panels are produced using CNC laser technology that enables high-precision, complex pattern cutting with excellent edge quality. Compared with plasma cutting, waterjet cutting, and mechanical punching, laser cutting offers superior design flexibility, precision, and aesthetic performance.
Corten flat sheets are widely used weathering steel plates available in a range of standard and custom sizes. Common thicknesses range from 1 mm to over 10 mm, with popular architectural sizes such as 1220×2440 mm and 1500×3000 mm.
Corten steel fencing panels are produced through multiple fabrication processes including CNC laser cutting, punching, bending, welding, and surface finishing. These processes allow the material to be transformed into highly customized and durable fencing systems.
Combined with the natural weathering process, corten steel fencing provides both strong structural performance and a distinctive rusted architectural appearance, making it widely used in modern landscape and architectural design projects.
Corten steel facade panels appear dark black or deep grey at the beginning due to mill scale formation, high-temperature oxidation, and surface treatment during manufacturing. This is a normal initial condition of weathering steel before exposure to natural weathering.
Once installed outdoors, the material gradually reacts with moisture and oxygen, transforming from a dark industrial surface into the characteristic orange-brown rusted façade that defines corten steel architecture.
Corten Steel Exterior Cladding
Corten steel and carbon steel differ significantly in both composition and performance. Corten steel contains alloying elements such as copper, chromium, and nickel, which allow it to form a protective rust layer, making it highly suitable for exterior cladding applications.
In contrast, carbon steel lacks these alloying elements and requires protective coatings to prevent continuous corrosion. Therefore, corten steel is preferred for modern architectural façade systems where durability, appearance, and low maintenance are essential.
Corten Steel Decorative Screens
Corten steel decorative screens are made from weathering steel with alloy elements such as copper, chromium, and nickel, which enable the formation of a stable protective rust layer. This gives the material both strong durability and a distinctive decorative appearance.
Due to their excellent mechanical properties, low maintenance requirements, and high design flexibility, corten steel screens are widely used in landscape architecture, building facades, interior decoration, and modern commercial design projects.
Rusted steel screens, also known as red rust steel screens, are typically made from weathering steel such as Corten A or ASTM A588. The red rust color is formed through a controlled oxidation process that creates a stable protective layer.
This material offers a combination of durability, low maintenance, and strong decorative value, making it widely used in garden design, architectural facades, and modern landscape projects.
Corten garden panels in the Chinese market are mainly made from GB/T 4171 weathering steel grades, including:
Q235NH (basic decorative use)
Q295NH (medium strength panels)
Q355NH (most widely used standard grade)
Q415NH / Q460NH (heavy-duty structural applications)
