Product Details
5052-O aluminum sheet is a widely used 5000 series aluminum-magnesium alloy in its fully annealed (O temper) condition. Compared with hardened tempers like H32 or H34, the “O” temper provides the highest formability and lowest strength, making it ideal for deep drawing, complex bending, and intricate forming processes.
This material is commonly used in marine, automotive, electrical, and general sheet metal fabrication where excellent corrosion resistance and shaping ability are required.
Chemical Composition of 5052 Aluminum
5052 aluminum is mainly an Al-Mg alloy, where magnesium is the key strengthening element.
| Element | Content (%) | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium (Mg) | 2.2 – 2.8 | Main strength and corrosion resistance element |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.15 – 0.35 | Improves corrosion resistance and stress stability |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.25 | Controls impurity level |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 0.40 | Impurity control |
| Aluminum (Al) | Balance | Base metal |
👉 The magnesium content gives 5052 excellent resistance to corrosion, especially in marine and humid environments.
What Does “O Temper” Mean?
The “O” temper indicates that the aluminum sheet has been:
- Fully annealed (softened by heat treatment)
- Relieved of internal stress
- Restored to maximum ductility
Key characteristics of 5052-O:
- Lowest strength in 5052 series
- Highest formability
- Excellent bending and deep drawing ability
- Very easy to process
Mechanical Properties of 5052-O
Typical properties:
- Tensile strength: ~ 170–210 MPa
- Yield strength: very low (~ 50–80 MPa)
- Excellent elongation (high ductility)
- Outstanding corrosion resistance
- Good weldability
👉 It is designed more for forming performance than structural strength.
5052-O vs Other 5052 Tempers
| Temper | Strength | Formability | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5052-O | Lowest | Excellent | Deep drawing, complex forming |
| 5052-H32 | Medium | Good | General sheet metal |
| 5052-H34 | Higher | Moderate | Structural panels |
👉 5052-O is preferred when shaping complexity is more important than strength.
5052 Aluminum vs Other 5000 Series Alloys
