ASTM A929 Type 2 corrugated pipe is an aluminum-coated corrugated steel drainage product designed for demanding long-term service, but “75 years” should be treated as a design-life benchmark rather than a universal guarantee. What A929 Type 2 Means

A commonly referenced Type 2 system uses approximately 305 g/m² total coating mass on both sides, corresponding to about 48 μm coating thickness on each surface. The exact purchasing requirement should always follow the applicable edition and project specification rather than relying on a commercial shorthand. 

Why Type 2 Is Used for Long-Life Drainage

The corrosion-protection mechanism is fundamentally different from galvanized steel. Aluminum rapidly develops a relatively stable oxide film, which can provide protection in many neutral and mildly acidic environments. This is one reason aluminum-coated corrugated steel pipe is attractive for drainage structures where long service life is required. 

Industry field studies have documented Type 2 corrugated pipe installations with several decades of service. A National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association study examined 26 core samples from helical and riveted installations ranging from 30 to 60 years old and found that the observed performance supported established 75- and 100-year service-life guidance under suitable environmental conditions.

75-Year Service Life: What the Number Actually Means

The frequently quoted 75-year service-life figure is associated with defined environmental and structural conditions. It should not be interpreted as “every Type 2 pipe will last at least 75 years regardless of site conditions.” Service life depends on coating integrity, steel thickness, soil chemistry, water chemistry, abrasion, flow conditions and installation quality.

Current industry guidance indicates that 16-gage Type 2 corrugated steel pipe can provide a minimum 75-year service life where the FHWA abrasion level is 2 or less, pH is approximately 5 to 9, and resistivity exceeds 1,500 ohm-cm. More stringent conditions can require a different material or supplemental protection.

Some agencies use more conservative limits. For example, Caltrans guidance has cited pH 5.5–8.5 and resistivity above 1,500 ohm-cm for a 50-year Type 2 design-life condition with 0.064-inch steel, illustrating why the project authority and governing design manual should control the final service-life calculation. 

Type 2 vs Galvanized: Service Life and Cost

For suitable environments, Type 2 can offer a longer corrosion-service-life pathway than conventional galvanized corrugated steel pipe. Historical FHWA field work found that, in the absence of abrasion, Type 2 pipe could have a service life several times longer than the life predicted for galvanized pipe by the California Method. However, the FHWA report also emphasized the limitations of the available field sample and the strong influence of abrasion.

Therefore, a procurement comparison should focus on lifecycle cost rather than coating price alone. Galvanized pipe may have an attractive initial cost in compatible environments, while Type 2 may become more attractive when the project prioritizes corrosion durability, difficult replacement conditions or a longer target design period.

Where Type 2 Performs Best — and Where It Does Not

Type 2 is particularly useful in drainage environments within established pH and resistivity limits. Industry guidance identifies a useful operating range around pH 5–9 with resistivity above 1,500 ohm-cm, while soft water is not generally considered a problem for Type 2 in the cited guidance. 

Alkaline environments deserve particular attention because the protective aluminum oxide film can be attacked at higher pH. The cited industry guidance specifically notes degradation of the oxide film above approximately pH 9. 

Abrasion Can Be More Important Than Corrosion

A common design mistake is to focus on the coating's corrosion resistance while ignoring the pipe invert. Sediment, gravel and bedload repeatedly strike the lower corrugations, and wet/dry cycling can combine with abrasion to accelerate local degradation. Long-term field research has found greater degradation on the water side than on the soil side at some installations, with pitting often concentrated around the upstream side of the corrugation invert.

Where abrasion is expected to be significant, engineers may need to consider thicker steel, concrete or other invert protection, additional coatings, or an alternative pipe material. Type 2 should therefore be selected from the combined corrosion + abrasion environment rather than from corrosion resistance alone.

Specification Matrix: Diameter, Corrugation and Thickness

Diameter, corrugation profile and steel thickness should be treated as a linked structural package. The following matrix is a procurement framework, not a substitute for the applicable structural design table or DOT specification.

Do not order a specific thickness simply because the pipe diameter is known. A structural designer must account for cover depth, soil conditions, traffic loading, corrugation geometry and installation quality. The coating provides corrosion protection; it does not replace structural design.

Installation: Protect the Cut End and Coating

Field cutting can create an exposed steel edge. This is particularly important when pipe sections are cut to accommodate site dimensions, outlet structures or end treatments. The cutting method should minimize unnecessary coating damage, and the exposed edge should be handled according to the project coating-repair requirements.

For factory-fabricated sections, the preferred approach is to define cutting, end treatment and coating-repair requirements before production. For field modifications, the governing transportation or project specification should determine the approved repair method.
