The answer is: yes, corten steel does rust—but in a controlled and protective way.
1. Why Corten Steel Still Rusts
Corten steel is not a “rust-proof” material. It is a weathering steel, which means:
- The surface reacts with oxygen and moisture
- A rust layer forms naturally over time
- This rust is not removed, but becomes part of the protection system
So when a new corten steel container is first exposed outdoors, it will start to rust like ordinary steel.

No. After a certain period:
