Product Details
Stainless steel sheets are available in different surface finishes depending on the production process and application requirements. Among the most common industrial finishes are No.1 finish and 2B finish, which are widely used in engineering, construction, and manufacturing.
These two surfaces differ mainly in processing method, surface roughness, appearance, and application scope.
No.1 Stainless Steel Finish
Processing Method
No.1 finish is produced by:
- Hot rolling
- Annealing (heat treatment)
- Pickling (acid cleaning to remove scale)
This process removes the rough oxide layer formed during hot rolling.
Surface Characteristics
- Rough and matte surface
- Non-reflective appearance
- Visible rolling texture
- Slightly uneven surface compared to cold-rolled finishes
Key Features
- Good corrosion resistance
- High heat resistance
- Suitable for high-temperature processing
- Strong structural performance
Typical Applications
- Industrial equipment
- Chemical tanks and vessels
- Heat exchangers
- Structural components
- Heavy-duty engineering use
2B Stainless Steel Finish
Processing Method
2B finish is produced by:
- Cold rolling
- Annealing
- Pickling
- Final light cold rolling (skin pass)
This extra finishing step gives a smoother surface.
Surface Characteristics
- Smooth and semi-reflective surface
- Uniform and fine texture
- More aesthetic than No.1 finish
- Easier to clean
Key Features
- Good corrosion resistance
- Better surface flatness than No.1
- Suitable for further polishing or coating
- Widely used in general fabrication
Typical Applications
- Kitchen equipment
- Building decoration
- Food processing equipment
- Medical instruments
- General industrial panels
No.1 vs 2B Finish – Key Comparison
| Property | No.1 Finish | 2B Finish |
|---|---|---|
| Production process | Hot rolled | Cold rolled |
| Surface appearance | Rough, matte | Smooth, semi-bright |
| Flatness | Lower | Higher |
| Corrosion resistance | Good | Better |
| Decorative use | Not suitable | Suitable |
| Industrial use | Heavy duty | General use |
Key Difference Explained
The main difference comes from the rolling process:
- No.1 → hot rolled surface, more rough and industrial
- 2B → cold rolled + final skin pass, smoother and more uniform
