5052 O aluminum sheet is a common Al-Mg alloy in the 5000 series. It is widely used in applications requiring excellent formability, high corrosion resistance, and easy processing. The “O” temper represents the fully annealed (soft) condition, which is the most ductile state of this alloy.

5052 belongs to the aluminum–magnesium alloy system, where magnesium is the main strengthening element.

How 5052 O Temper is Formed
The “O” condition is created through a full annealing process, which softens the material.
Manufacturing Process:
- Cold rolling or hot rolling
- The aluminum sheet is first processed to required thickness
- Solution heating (annealing)
- Material is heated to a specific temperature range
- Internal stress is eliminated
- Controlled cooling
- Slow cooling allows microstructure to stabilize
- Material becomes soft and ductile

1. Maximum Formability
- Very soft and highly ductile
- Easy to bend, deep draw, and stretch
- Ideal for complex forming operations
2. Excellent Corrosion Resistance
- High magnesium content forms stable protective oxide layer

3. Low Strength Condition
- Lowest strength state among 5052 tempers
- Not suitable for structural load-bearing use
- Strength increases after strain hardening (H32, H34, etc.)
4. Good Weldability
- Easy to weld with standard aluminum processes
- Stable performance after forming and welding
Why “O Temper” is Important
The O temper is widely used because:
- It provides maximum elongation and softness
- It allows deep forming without cracking
- It serves as a starting material for further processing
After forming, the material can be strengthened into H temper states if needed.
