Product Details
Stainless steel metal gauge refers to a thickness measurement system used for stainless steel sheets and plates. Unlike direct metric measurement, gauge is a traditional system mainly used in North America. Different gauge numbers represent different thickness levels, and the higher the gauge number, the thinner the stainless steel sheet.
Understanding gauge conversion is important for selecting the correct stainless steel material in engineering, fabrication, and manufacturing applications.
Stainless Steel Thickness Measurement Units
Stainless steel sheet thickness is commonly expressed in three systems:
- Gauge (GA)
- Millimeters (mm)
- Inches (in)
Each system is widely used in different industries and regions.
Common Stainless Steel Gauge to Thickness Conversion Table
| Gauge | Thickness (mm) | Thickness (inch) |
|---|---|---|
| 26 GA | 0.48 mm | 0.019 in |
| 24 GA | 0.60 mm | 0.024 in |
| 22 GA | 0.75 mm | 0.030 in |
| 20 GA | 0.90 mm | 0.036 in |
| 18 GA | 1.20 mm | 0.048 in |
| 16 GA | 1.50 mm | 0.060 in |
| 14 GA | 2.00 mm | 0.075 in |
| 12 GA | 2.50 mm | 0.100 in |
| 10 GA | 3.00 mm | 0.120 in |
| 8 GA | 4.00 mm | 0.160 in |
| 6 GA | 5.00 mm | 0.190 in |
| 4 GA | 6.00 mm | 0.240 in |
Metric Thickness System (mm Standard)
In most international markets, stainless steel is mainly specified in millimeters:
Thin Sheet Range
- 0.3 – 1.5 mm → Decorative and light fabrication
Standard Sheet Range
- 1.5 – 3.0 mm → General industrial use
Medium Plate Range
- 3.0 – 6.0 mm → Structural components
Heavy Plate Range
- 6.0 mm and above → Engineering and load-bearing applications
Inch Thickness System
In the United States and some engineering fields, inch units are also widely used:
- 1 mm = 0.03937 inch
- 3 mm ≈ 0.118 inch
- 6 mm ≈ 0.236 inch
- 12 mm ≈ 0.472 inch
- 25 mm ≈ 1 inch
Relationship Between Gauge and Stainless Steel Usage
Thin Gauge (24–26 GA)
- Decorative panels
- Kitchen equipment surfaces
- Light industrial covers
Medium Gauge (18–20 GA)
- Food processing equipment
- Appliance manufacturing
- General fabrication
Heavy Gauge (10–14 GA)
- Structural components
- Machinery bases
- Industrial equipment parts
Thick Plate (Below 10 GA)
- Engineering structures
- Chemical and marine equipment
- Load-bearing applications
Important Notes About Gauge System
- Gauge values are not universal across all metals (stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum may differ slightly)
- Metric mm system is more accurate for engineering design
- Gauge system is still widely used in the US market for ordering and communication
