AR400, AR450, AR500 and AR700 high strength wear resistant steel plates are widely used in mining, construction, earthmoving, and heavy equipment industries. These steels are designed to resist abrasion and impact under extreme working conditions.
One of the most important questions from buyers is: Why are wear-resistant steel plates mainly produced by hot rolling instead of cold rolling?
What Is Wear Resistant Steel Plate?
Wear resistant steel plate (AR steel plate) is a quenched and tempered high-carbon alloy steel. Its hardness typically ranges from 360 HB to 650+ HB, depending on grade (AR400 to AR700).
- AR400: General wear applications
- AR450: Medium-high abrasion resistance
- AR500: Heavy wear environments
- AR700: Extreme abrasion and impact conditions
Why Wear Resistant Steel Is Hot Rolled?
Most AR wear resistant steel plates are produced through hot rolling + quenching + tempering (Q&T process). This is because wear-resistant steel requires a specific internal structure that cannot be achieved by cold rolling.
1. High hardness requires thermal transformation
AR steel achieves its hardness through heat treatment. Hot rolling allows the steel to be reheated above recrystallization temperature, enabling martensitic transformation after quenching. Cold rolling cannot create this microstructure efficiently.
2. Thick plate production is only possible via hot rolling
Wear plates are usually thick (6mm–100mm+). Cold rolling is limited to thin gauges and cannot handle heavy section deformation.
3. Better toughness for impact environments
Mining and construction equipment require both hardness and impact resistance. Hot rolling combined with controlled cooling improves toughness while maintaining wear resistance.
4. Lower internal stress and better stability
Hot rolled and heat-treated AR plates have more stable internal structure, reducing cracking risk during cutting, welding, and forming.
Why Not Cold Rolled Wear Resistant Steel?
- Cold rolling cannot achieve AR500–AR700 hardness levels
- High deformation leads to cracking risk
- Limited thickness range (not suitable for heavy plates)
- Cannot form quenched martensitic structure efficiently
For this reason, cold rolled steel is mainly used for stainless steel, mild steel sheets, and thin precision strips, not for high hardness wear plates.
