Corten steel cladding, also known as weathering steel panels, is designed to create a natural protective rust layer on its surface. This layer — called patina — not only gives Corten steel its unique reddish-brown color but also protects it from further corrosion, making it both durable and visually distinctive.
🔹 The Process of Rust Formation
When Corten steel is exposed to the atmosphere, it undergoes a controlled oxidation process. The key steps are:
Initial Exposure
The bare steel surface reacts with oxygen, moisture, and pollutants in the air.
A thin layer of iron oxide (ordinary rust) begins to form.
Patina Development
Over weeks or months, this oxide layer transforms into a dense, adherent patina.
Unlike ordinary rust, this patina seals the surface, preventing deep corrosion.
Stabilization Phase
The surface gradually darkens from orange to deep reddish-brown.
Once stabilized, the patina becomes non-porous and self-healing — small scratches will re-oxidize naturally.
