Product Details
Corten steel cladding, also known as weathering steel panels, is designed to create a natural protective rust layer on its surface. This layer — called patina — not only gives Corten steel its unique reddish-brown color but also protects it from further corrosion, making it both durable and visually distinctive.
🔹 The Process of Rust Formation
When Corten steel is exposed to the atmosphere, it undergoes a controlled oxidation process. The key steps are:
Initial Exposure
The bare steel surface reacts with oxygen, moisture, and pollutants in the air.
A thin layer of iron oxide (ordinary rust) begins to form.
Patina Development
Over weeks or months, this oxide layer transforms into a dense, adherent patina.
Unlike ordinary rust, this patina seals the surface, preventing deep corrosion.
Stabilization Phase
The surface gradually darkens from orange to deep reddish-brown.
Once stabilized, the patina becomes non-porous and self-healing — small scratches will re-oxidize naturally.
🔹 Accelerated Rusting Techniques
In architectural or decorative applications, it’s often desirable to accelerate patina formation for uniform appearance before installation. Common methods include:
| Method | Description | Timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| Water Spray Cycle | Alternating wet and dry cycles using clean water | 1–2 weeks |
| Salt Solution Treatment | Applying a mild saltwater mist to initiate oxidation | Few days |
| Hydrogen Peroxide & Vinegar Mix | Eco-friendly surface oxidation accelerator | 1–3 days |
| Outdoor Weather Exposure | Natural exposure under open air | 1–6 months |
⚙️ Note: The patina develops best under alternating wet/dry conditions. Continuous moisture or poor drainage may lead to uneven color or corrosion.
🔹 Why Corten Steel is Ideal for Cladding
Natural Self-Protective Layer — No painting or coating required
Durability — Excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion
Low Maintenance — Minimal upkeep once patina stabilizes
Aesthetic Appeal — Warm, organic appearance that evolves with time
