Product Details
316L stainless steel coil is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel belonging to the molybdenum-bearing 300 series. Compared with 304 stainless steel, 316L offers enhanced corrosion resistance, especially in chloride and marine environments. The low carbon content reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding, making it ideal for fabrication and heavy forming applications.
Chemical Composition of 316L Stainless Steel Coil
The improved corrosion resistance of 316L is mainly due to the addition of Molybdenum (Mo) and controlled low carbon content.
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.0 – 18.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 10.0 – 14.0 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.0 – 3.0 |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.03 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Role of Key Alloying Elements
Chromium (Cr) forms a passive oxide layer for corrosion resistance.
Nickel (Ni) improves ductility and structural stability.
Molybdenum (Mo) enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Low Carbon (≤0.03%) minimizes carbide precipitation during welding.
