Product Details
301 stainless sheet is a metastable austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent cold work hardening capability. Compared with 304 stainless steel, 301 contains lower nickel content, which gives it higher strength after cold rolling while maintaining good corrosion resistance.
The material is commonly referred to as 301 stainless steel, and it belongs to the 300-series chromium-nickel stainless steels.
1. Chemical Composition of 301 Stainless Steel
The composition is optimized to enhance strength through cold working.
Typical Chemical Composition (%)
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.0 – 18.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 6.0 – 8.0 |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.15 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.0 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.0 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.03 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Lower nickel content increases work hardening rate and tensile strength after deformation.
2. Mechanical Properties
Properties vary depending on temper condition (annealed, 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, full hard).
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 515 MPa |
| Yield Strength | ≥ 205 MPa |
| Elongation | ≥ 40% |
| Hardness | ≤ 217 HB |
After cold working, tensile strength can exceed 1000 MPa depending on hardness level.
3. Key Performance Characteristics
3.1 Excellent Work Hardening
301 stainless sheet rapidly increases in strength during cold rolling or forming, making it ideal for high-strength spring applications.
3.2 Good Corrosion Resistance
Provides corrosion resistance comparable to 304 in mild environments, though slightly lower due to reduced nickel content.
3.3 High Strength-to-Weight Ratio
Widely used where lightweight but strong material is required.
3.4 Good Formability
In annealed condition, it has good ductility for bending and stamping.
4. Common Applications of 301 Stainless Sheet
4.1 Springs and Elastic Components
Flat springs
Spiral springs
Clip springs
Washers
4.2 Automotive Industry

5. Comparison with Other Austenitic Grades
| Grade | Nickel Content | Main Feature | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 301 | 6–8% | High work hardening | Springs |
| 304 | 8–10.5% | General corrosion resistance | Kitchen equipment |
| 316 | 10–14% | Marine corrosion resistance | Chemical & marine |
