Product Details
304L stainless steel is a low-carbon version of 304 austenitic stainless steel.
- The “L” stands for Low Carbon (≤0.03%), which prevents sensitization during welding.
- It retains the excellent corrosion resistance, strength, and formability of 304, making it ideal for welded structures and chemical applications.
Chemical Composition of 304L
| Element | 304L Content (%) | 304 Content (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 18.0 – 20.0 | 18.0 – 20.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 8.0 – 12.0 | 8.0 – 12.0 |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.03 | ≤ 0.08 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.0 | ≤ 2.0 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.0 | ≤ 1.0 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.03 | ≤ 0.03 |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤ 0.10 | ≤ 0.10 |
Key Points:
- Lower carbon reduces carbide precipitation during welding
- Maintains austenitic structure for corrosion resistance
- Molybdenum-free version performs similarly to 304 in general conditions
Mechanical Properties
| Property | 304L | 304 |
|---|---|---|
| Yield Strength | ≥ 170 MPa | ≥ 205 MPa |
| Tensile Strength | 485 – 620 MPa | 505 – 735 MPa |
| Elongation | ≥ 40% | ≥ 40% |
| Hardness | ≤ 95 HRB | ≤ 95 HRB |
Characteristics:
- Slightly lower tensile strength than 304
- Excellent ductility and formability
- Can be cold worked and formed like 304
Corrosion Resistance
- 304L provides excellent corrosion resistance, similar to 304
- Particularly effective in welded structures, where 304 may suffer from sensitization
- Resistant to:
- Oxidation and atmospheric corrosion
- Mild acids and alkalis
- Food and beverage environments
Note: For extreme chloride environments, 316L is preferred.

304L vs 304 – Key Differences
| Feature | 304L | 304 |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Content | ≤ 0.03% | ≤ 0.08% |
| Sensitization Risk | Very low | Moderate during welding |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent in welded structures | Excellent, slightly lower in welds |
| Tensile Strength | Slightly lower | Higher |
| Applications | Welded structures, chemical industry | General-purpose, decorative, industrial |
Summary:
- 304L is ideal when welding is required or for long-term chemical exposure
- 304 is suitable for general-purpose applications where welding is limited
