Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a group of low-alloy steels designed to form a protective rust layer (patina) when exposed to the atmosphere. This characteristic provides enhanced corrosion resistance and reduces the need for surface coatings.
Corten steel is not a single grade, but a family of materials defined under different international standards such as EN (Europe), ASTM (USA), and others.
EN Standard Grades (European System)
These grades are widely used in Europe, Asia, and international projects.
S355 Series (Structural Weathering Steel)
- S355J2W
- Yield strength ≥ 355 MPa
- Impact tested at -20°C
- Suitable for structural and load-bearing applications
- S355J0WP
- Impact tested at 0°C
- Good balance of strength and corrosion resistance
- Common for cladding and general outdoor structures
S235 Series (Lower Strength Option)
- S235J2W
- Yield strength ≥ 235 MPa

- More economical than S355 grades

ASTM A588
- Grades: A, B, C, K
- High-strength low-alloy weathering steel

- One of the earliest weathering steel grades
- Good atmospheric corrosion resistance

ASTM A606
- Type 4 (weathering grade)
