Rust steel is a general term used to describe steel that develops a visible rust-colored surface layer when exposed to outdoor environments. In most industrial and architectural contexts, “rust steel” usually refers to Corten steel (weathering steel) rather than ordinary carbon steel.
The reason is simple: Corten steel is designed to rust in a controlled way, forming a stable protective layer instead of continuously corroding.
Why “Rust Steel” Usually Means Corten Steel
Although all carbon steels can rust, not all rust is the same.
Ordinary Carbon Steel:
- Rust is loose and flaky
- Corrosion keeps spreading inward
- Structural strength decreases over time
- Requires painting or coating for protection
Corten Steel (Weathering Steel):
- Rust layer is dense and stable
- Surface oxidation is controlled
- Corrosion rate slows after initial exposure
- No coating required in many outdoor uses
Because of this controlled rusting behavior, Corten steel becomes the only “rust steel” suitable for architectural and structural use.
How Corten Steel Forms “Protective Rust”
The key feature of rust steel is the formation of a protective patina layer:
- Initial exposure to air and moisture
- Formation of uniform rust layer
- Alloy elements react (Cu, Cr, Ni, P)
- Dense oxide film develops
- Rust layer stabilizes and blocks further corrosion
This is why Corten steel is called a self-protecting steel.
Chemical Basis of Rust Steel (Corten Steel)
Weathering steel contains small amounts of alloying elements:
- Copper (Cu) → improves rust layer stability
- Chromium (Cr) → enhances corrosion resistance
- Nickel (Ni) → improves toughness and durability
- Phosphorus (P) → promotes protective oxide formation
These elements distinguish it from ordinary carbon steel.
