Product Details
Stainless steel flat rolled coil refers to stainless steel produced in continuous coil form, including both hot rolled coil (HRC) and cold rolled coil (CRC). These two types differ not only in production process and surface quality, but also in storage methods and surface protection requirements.
Proper storage and protection are essential to prevent scratches, oxidation, contamination, and surface degradation during transportation and warehouse handling.
1. Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Coil (HRC)
Surface Characteristics
Hot rolled stainless steel coil typically has:
- Rougher surface finish (No.1 finish)
- Oxide scale or pickled surface
- Lower surface brightness
- Higher tolerance for surface appearance
Storage Method for Hot Rolled Coil
Hot rolled coils are generally more robust in surface condition, but still require proper storage:
- Stored in dry, ventilated warehouse
- Kept on steel or wooden pallets
- Avoid direct contact with ground moisture
- Outdoor storage is possible with protective covering (limited time only)
- Coils should be stored horizontally and stabilized with wedges or supports
Surface Protection for Hot Rolled Coil
Protection requirements are relatively basic:
- Anti-rust oil or light protective coating (if required)
- Waterproof covering (tarpaulin or film wrapping)
- Protection against rainwater and humidity
- Avoid long-term exposure to chloride environments
Hot rolled coil is mainly used for structural applications, so surface protection focus is on corrosion prevention rather than appearance.
2. Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Coil (CRC)
Surface Characteristics
Cold rolled stainless steel coil has:
- Smooth and bright surface (2B, BA, or polished finish)
- High surface accuracy and flatness
- Sensitive to scratches and contamination
- Widely used for decorative and precision applications
Storage Method for Cold Rolled Coil
Cold rolled coils require stricter storage conditions:
- Stored in clean, dry indoor warehouse
- Temperature and humidity controlled environment preferred
- Avoid dust, oil, and chemical contamination
- Coils should be stored on non-abrasive wooden or rubber pads
- No stacking of heavy coils directly on top of each other
Surface Protection for Cold Rolled Coil
Cold rolled coils require high-level surface protection:
- PE protective film applied on both sides (especially 2B/BA finish)
- Paper interleaving or anti-scratch layer protection
- Anti-fingerprint coating (for high-end decorative grades)
- Strict handling rules (no direct metal contact tools)
- Use of lifting equipment with soft slings
The main goal is to preserve surface brightness and scratch-free condition.
3. Key Differences: Hot Rolled vs Cold Rolled Coil Protection
| Feature | Hot Rolled Coil (HRC) | Cold Rolled Coil (CRC) |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Sensitivity | Low | High |
| Storage Environment | Indoor/Outdoor acceptable | Strict indoor storage required |
| Moisture Protection | Basic | Strong protection required |
| Surface Protection | Light coating / wrapping | PE film + anti-scratch layers |
| Handling Care Level | Standard | High precision handling |
| Main Risk | Rust | Scratches & surface damage |
4. Common Handling and Transportation Requirements
For both hot and cold rolled coils:
- Use proper lifting equipment (coil hooks or C-hooks)
- Avoid dragging coils on hard surfaces
- Secure coils during transport to prevent rolling
- Protect edges from impact damage
- Keep away from corrosive chemicals and salt environments
