Production Process:
The production process of Corten Steel combines alloy design, hot processing, and natural oxidation control to create a structural material with high corrosion resistance and a unique appearance. The whole process is mainly divided into the following stages:
1. Alloy composition design
The key to weathering steel lies in its alloy ratio. Compared with ordinary carbon steel, Corten steel contains copper, chromium, nickel, phosphorus, and other elements. These trace elements form a stable oxide layer on the surface of steel, which significantly improves its atmospheric corrosion resistance. Copper and nickel can enhance steel's self-rust stability, chromium helps densify the oxide film, and phosphorus improves the adhesion of the initial rust layer.
2. Steelmaking and casting
After the alloy elements are optimized, the molten steel is smelted in a converter or electric furnace to remove impurities. The molten steel is then cast into billets through a continuous casting process to provide the raw material basis for the subsequent rolling stage. This stage requires the control of the uniformity and cleanliness of the element content to ensure the final material performance.
3. Hot rolling forming
After the steel billet enters the hot rolling line, it is heated to a certain temperature and then pressed into steel plates or profiles of the required thickness through multiple rolling mills. The hot rolling process controls its grain refinement and mechanical properties while ensuring surface flatness and dimensional accuracy.
4. Surface treatment and oxidation preparation
Before delivery, Corten steel generally maintains the original rolled surface. However, to accelerate the rust effect at the project site, surface pretreatment such as sandblasting, pickling, water mist catalysis, etc., can be carried out to accelerate the formation of a uniform rust layer and avoid uneven rust spots.
5. Natural formation of oxidized rust layer
After installation, the steel is exposed to the natural environment, undergoing wind and rain erosion and dry-wet cycles, and an initial rust layer gradually forms on its surface. Within a certain period, this layer of rust is transformed into a dense and stable protective layer, which effectively inhibits further corrosion while showing an elegant reddish-brown artistic texture.
The entire production process strictly controls every link, from alloy design to surface changes, so that Corten Steel meets both structural strength and visual aesthetics.
